Photo Friday at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project


Did you ever look at a photo of yourself or a family member from a long time ago and compare it to a recent picture? For today’s Photo Friday, we decided to do just that for the Calaveras Dam and its replacement.




Calaveras Dam in 2011. The project groundbreaking was in 2011. 





Calaveras Dam in April 2017. The project is more than 80% complete. We have moved more than 8 million cubic yards of rock and soil to date. We have fully excavated and grouted the left and right abutments. And in the center of the picture, the core of the new Calaveras Dam begins to take shape.  The huge concrete spillway (as wide as a freeway) is visible at the lower right. Wow.

Construction on this project started in 2011 and is expected to be complete in April 2019.

Butterflies, Gates and Sleeves, Oh, My!


What do butterflies, gates, cones, balls, and sleeves have in common?

They are all types of valves used to control the flow of water through pipelines.  Instead of our usual Photo Friday, we thought we’d take the time to honor this under- appreciated, but extremely important, feature in our water system.  For the record, a valve is a mechanical device that blocks a pipe either partially or completely to change the amount of fluid that passes through it. And we at the SFPUC couldn’t operate much in the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System without them.

Here at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project, we are installing all sorts of  valves to control the flow of water from Calaveras Reservoir for different purposes. Each valve is specially designed to control water in a specific way without damage to the surrounding pipeline. So, let’s geek out about valves!



ButterflyA butterfly valve is a disk that sits in the middle of a pipe and swivels sideways (to admit fluid) or upright (to block the flow completely). It can also open partially to carefully calibrate the amount of water flowing through the pipe.


We are using a 48-inch diameter butterfly valve to control the flow of water to a temporary supply line for the Sunol Water Treatment Plant.










The Sleeve. The Bailey valve sleeve valve reduces water pressure and controls flow by diverting the water through multiple holes located within the sleeve and discharging to the atmosphere or a body of water. The valve controls flow by sliding one pipe called the gate over another pipe called the sleeve.

The Ball. In a ball valve, a hollowed-out sphere (the ball) sits tightly inside a pipe, completely blocking the fluid flow. When you turn the handle, it makes the ball swivel through ninety degrees, allowing the fluid to flow through the middle of it.  

These serve a similar purpose as the butterfly valve to calibrate the amount of flow.




The Cone. The body of the fixed cone valve is a tube with a cone in the end welded with some grooves.  Another tube acts as the closure member. This slides over the body groves in a linear movement to regulate until making contact against the seat of the cone when the valve is fully closed. 

This valve is not unlike your bathroom faucet, only in our case, a whole lot larger.

The fixed cone valve is used to discharge water at high pressure from reservoirs or full pipes into the atmosphere.  The flow towards the exit of the valve is not converging so that the discharge is in the shape of a hollow jet.

The Gate. Gate valves open and close pipes by lowering metal gates across them. Most valves of this kind are designed to be either fully open or fully closed. Meaning, unlike the butterfly or ball valves, gate valves tend not to provide controlled flows of water, but either turn the flow completely on or completely off.

What is this Building and What Does it Have to do with Fish?


Despite the recent heavy rains, the crews at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project have been pouring concrete for an important feature of the future Dam – the stream maintenance building, pictured below.  The new building stands 25 feet tall and is located downstream at the toe of the future replacement dam.

We at the SFPUC will be releasing water from the future Calaveras Dam to support fish in the Southern Alameda Creek Watershed.  What’s that have to do with this building?  A lot, actually.  The stream maintenance structure provides a place for water discharged out of the future Dam to be collected and then discharged in a controlled manner to the nearby Creeks to support fish habitat. Water will flow from the reservoir to the structure via two 30 inch diameter pipes. Water will exit the structure over grouted rip rap to prevent erosion.

The Calaveras Dam Replacement project is more than 80% complete and expected to be completed in mid-2019.

Getting By with a Little Help From Our Friends

We do not need to tell you that now is the rainy season in Northern California. Some amphibians in the  Sunol Valley use the the wet season to move around from their burrows to breeding habitat and to find food.

Recently one of the workers at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project spotted this California newt  passing through the construction site. On its back a Sierran Tree frog was hitching a ride. Who can’t relate to a time when you need a lift to get where you’re going?

Our workers are trained to spot wildlife like this and move them out of harm’s way for construction… hitchhiking or not.

Building the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project Safely

Today, the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project took a moment to celebrate another safety milestone. We have reached over 105,000 safety hours with zero recordable incidents for this quarter. 

Our crews from the joint venture of Dragados USA, Flatiron and Sukut Construction have been working both day and night shifts in Sunol Valley. This safety record is very impressive with all the major work that has involved operating heavy machinery, prepping the foundation for the new dam, importing of materials to the site and placing materials to build the replacement dam. Along with a great safety record, we have also brought on over 280 new local hires to the project this quarter. 

Since construction began in 2011, we have reached over 1.4 million total working hours on the job. Our project has not had any lost time recordable incidents since 2012. We strive to maintain our safety culture here at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project as we continue the critical work ahead to construct the replacement dam.

Mountain Lions at Calaveras Dam

Just this week at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project, crews were able to install a special feature to the new Intake Tower roof.  The new intake tower is part of the outlet works that releases water from the reservoir. The special features are roof drain scuppers made of cast bronze in the shape of a mountain lion head designed by artist Manuel Palos and architect Andrew Maloney.

Why a Mountain Lion?
The lion head “grotesque” & “gargoyle” ornament has decorated buildings for thousands of years. In Greek and Roman classical architecture, the lion was a symbol of the fallen hero, guardian of gates, temples, and public buildings. The rain water from the roof is collected in the drain and exits the mouth of the mountain lion.    


Mountain lions are native to the Alameda Creek Watershed. Some construction workers have seen them on site and we even captured footage on our trail camera:

May 31st is National Dam Safety Awareness Day

Each year, the nation commemorates May 31st as National Dam Safety Awareness Day. We have an important dam under construction here in Sunol Valley – the Calaveras Dam. Dams play a critical role in our water supply. 

Why is it important?
  • Calaveras Reservoir, impounded by Calaveras Dam, when full provides half of Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System's Bay Area storage
    • Upon completion, we will have a new seismically upgraded dam with a structural height of 220 feet, a crest length of 1210 feet and width of 80 feet at the crest and 1180 feet at the base
    • It is crucial to the reliability of the water supply of 2.6 million people during emergencies and in times of drought
    Today reminds us just how critical our work is here in Sunol Valley to rebuild the Calaveras Dam.

    Calaveras Dam Team participates in the US Society on Dams Conference

    Some of our Sunol Valley Project team members are visiting Colorado this week. And they are not visiting to see the snow, but taking part in the United States Society on Dams (USSD) 2016 Annual Conference representing the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project.

    As you know, the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project is the largest project of the $4.8 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) to repair, replace, and seismically upgrade key components of the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System. 

    Our WSIP Director Dan Wade and Calaveras Dam Project Manager Susan Hou were joined by the members of our SFPUC Engineering Management Bureau at the conference to present on the construction and challenges with the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project.

    The completion of the project is important to the water supply for the Bay Area. 
    Calaveras Reservoir, when full, represents nearly half of all the water storage in the Bay Area for the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System that serves 2.6 million customers. Calaveras Reservoir is a crucial source of water supply during times of drought and when Hetch Hetchy Reservoir supplies are unavailable for any reason. 

    Our project construction continues and we have moved over 7 million cubic yards of earth and rock materials to make room for the new dam. We plan to start constructing the replacement dam later this year. The project is over 70% complete.

    Calaveras Road Traffic Advisory - Increased Haul Truck Traffic Starting April 4th

    Please expect increased truck traffic on Calaveras Road beginning April 4, 2016 through April 29, 2016 during daytime hours. The project will haul materials from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Night hauling also continues through June 1st which begins approximately from 6:00 pm to 4:00 am, Monday through Friday.

    This affects the portion of Calaveras Road between the I-680 entrance in Sunol to the entrance of the construction site for the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project located south of Geary Road. Commuters may experience periodic delays. Cyclists: please try to avoid this area if at all possible to remain safe.
     
    • Calaveras Road remains open to the public
    • Increase in haul trucks expected between the hours of 6:00 a.m to 4:00 a.m Monday thru Friday
    • Please drive and ride safely on the narrow portions of Calaveras Road and expect delays
    • Speed limit is 25mph in construction zones

    Time to Spring Forward!

    It is starting to look a lot like spring in the Sunol Valley. One of our team members snapped this picture of some Golden Poppies from the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project construction site. In addition, it is time to spring forward with Daylight savings time starting this Sunday, March 13, 2016. Don’t forget to turn your clocks forward one hour for more light in the evening and a later sunrise! Hello Spring!

    Calaveras Road Traffic Advisory: Haul Trucks at Night starting February 8, 2016 thru June 1, 2016


    Large haul trucks will begin to transport materials on Calaveras Road 
    in the evening hours starting as early as 7:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. 
    starting February 8th thru June 1st. Hauling will be Monday  through Friday. 

    The trucks will travel on Calaveras Road between I-680 and to the 
    entrance of the construction site for the Calaveras Dam Replacement 
    Project south of Geary Road. Commuters may experience periodic delays. 
    Cyclists: please try to avoid this area during these hours if at all 
    possible to remain safe.

    Future Road Closure ­ Calaveras Road

    The SFPUC will continue to work with Alameda and Santa Clara county staff to temporarily close Calaveras Road south of Geary Road to the project site for an 18 month period starting June 2016, weekdays only. The closure is necessary to protect the safety of the public on the road, while large trucks haul sands and gravels to the site.

    Calaveras Dam Celebrates another Safety Milestone


    According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), nearly 6.5 million people work at construction sites across the nation on any given day. The rate of injuries for construction workers is higher than those workers in other job categories in the United States. On average, we could have 150 workers on site at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project.
    The construction crews at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project work multiple shifts – both day and night – working with huge machinery on a very complicated job site in challenging conditions. And yet the construction crews, who work for the joint venture of Dragados USA, Flatiron Construction and Sukut Construction, celebrated a huge safety milestone this week. Our crews have worked 75,000 safe working hours for the last quarter (from September 24, 2015 through December 31, 2015) without any recordable safety incidents. In fact, to date, they have a total of 304,146 work hours without recordable safety incidents as of December 2015. The last lost time incident was recorded in 2012. The teams celebrated with a well-deserved barbeque lunch on site to celebrate their success, and remind each other of the need to continue with their best practices to keep everyone safe.

    As we continue the critical work to complete the project, we applaud our teams for continuing to make safety a priority here at Calaveras Dam.

    What’s on Tap for Sunol Valley and the Greater East Bay for 2016?


    Our SFPUC teams in the East Bay are looking forward to a busy 2016. The $4.8 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) might be more than 90% complete, but the majority of the work left to be done is right here.  We look forward to continuing on our old projects and starting new ones in the New Year. Here are a few highlights.






    Calaveras Dam Replacement Project Rolls Onward.

    The project is more than 70% complete. We will complete the Dam spillway, and will begin heavy hauling of materials for the dam starting in the middle of this year. Please subscribe to our blog at sfwater.org/sunolvalley for Calaveras Road Updates.

    Alameda Creek Fish Passage Project Starts.

    Construction on a project at our Alameda Creek Diversion Dam is set to start in February or March of 2016. The project entails partial demolition of the existing Alameda Creek Diversion Tunnel’s intake structure, and construction of a fish ladder to facilitate fish passage around the existing Alameda Creek Diversion Dam. Users of East Bay Regional Park’s Sunol Regional Wilderness might see increased construction traffic on Geary and Camp Ohlone Road starting in Spring. Construction is scheduled to end in sometime in late 2017 / 2018. 




    Ice Age Fossils on Display.

    Ice Age Fossils that were found in Fremont at a WSIP Project in Fremont are expected to go on display in May. More than 50 specimens were found on the construction site of the Seismic Upgrade of Bay Division Pipelines 3 and 4 at the Hayward Fault Crossing in Fremont Project in 2013. Crews found the bones of at least 2 bison, horse, camel, elk, rabbit, gophers and more. Those fossils have a new home at the Fremont Children's Natural History Museum, and will go on display in May.

    Alameda Creek Watershed Center / Sunol Yard Upgrade Begins Construction.

    In August of 2016, construction to upgrade the SFPUC’s corporation yard at the corner of Paloma Way and Highway 84 will begin. Construction of the new Alameda Creek Watershed Center is also part of this same project, but will begin approximately 9 months after the Sunol Corporation Yard project starts.     The new Alameda Creek Watershed Center will be located adjacent to the Sunol Water Temple. Construction activities will start this year.

    A New Bridge for the New Year

    We at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project have been talking a lot about the new spillway under construction at the dam. And why not? It is as wide as a six lane freeway, with walls that are 40 feet tall, and it is 1500 feet long. We placed over 50,000 cubic yards of concrete into the structure to date, and it has been the major focus of activity at the dam for over a year.  Spillways allow dams to safely discharge water without overtopping. This is a key safety feature of any dam, particularly Calaveras Dam as it is an earth and rock fill dam.

    Last week we sent out a traffic notice for users of Calaveras Road to be aware that three large trucks would be making a very special delivery for our favorite spillway – its bridge. So special that it had to be trucked in six sections all the way from Ohio.
    The spillway bridge will allow future personnel to drive across the top of the spillway safely and access the top of the new dam and outlet works at the toe of the dam. Crews used special cranes to begin installation of the bridge this week. We will be completely done with the spillway this spring.

Commuters may experience periodic delays. Cyclists: please try to avoid this area during delivery hours if at all possible to remain safe.

    · Deliveries of wide structures are expected between 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
    · Please drive and ride safely on the narrow portions of Calaveras Road and expect delays

    Project Summary:
    The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), owner and operator of the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System, is building a new dam to replace the existing Calaveras Dam. The Calaveras Reservoir, impounded by Calaveras Dam, is our system’s largest drinking water reservoir in the local Bay Area. Upon completion of the project, the reservoir provides more than half of our Bay Area storage capacity for 2.6 million customers and is crucial in times of drought. Project completion is expected in late 2018.

    Talkin' Turkey


    There are turkeys crossing the road just about everywhere you look on Calaveras Road. 

    These two make a nice pair as one watches while the other preens.  Turns out preening is just a fancy word for keeping your feathers clean and looking pretty.  Males find this comes in handy when they are showing off and courting a mate.




    This got the Calaveras team talkin’ turkey and exchanging fun facts about this animal – just in time for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

    Here’s a few:

    • Where did turkeys get their name?  They are not a native species and since they were imported by Turkish merchants, the English took to calling them turkeys.
    • How can you tell a turkey’s gender?  Believe it or not the droppings give a great clue:  males produce spiral shaped poop and females poop resembles the letter J.
    • Ben Franklin is famous for having had had a special place in his heart for turkeys.  An eagle, he wrote in a letter to his daughter, had "bad moral character." A turkey, on the other hand, was a "much more respectable bird."
    • And finally, turkeys can run at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.  Might come in handy if they don’t want to be part of the upcoming festive meal…

    However you spend the upcoming holiday, we wish you and yours the very best!

    One huge pipe at Calaveras Dam


    As we busily work towards construction of a replacement Calaveras Dam, there are many fundamental issues we have to address. For example, given that the existing Calaveras Dam will be left in place when we are done, how will we be able to transport water out of the reservoir when the new dam is built?

    Answer: We are building a large pipe (more than 7 feet in diameter) that will be completely buried in the new dam that connects directly to the outlet structure already in place in the existing dam.
    This pipe will transport our drinking water supply from the Calaveras Reservoir to the Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant and then on to our 2.6 million Bay Area customers when supplies are needed.
    To date, our crews have installed 500 feet of the new steel pipe, welded  the joints, and started building the formwork for reinforced concrete encasement  around the entire pipeline to protect it. The pipeline and encasement  has been designed to withstand the force of being buried under 180 feet of earth embankment as well as the force of any seismic activity from the nearby Calaveras Fault. The team plans to connect the new 78 inch pipe to the existing pipes within the existing dam in Fall 2016. 

    Seems a shame to put all this work into something that will be completely buried under more than 3.5 million cubic yards of earth and rock. But, thanks to these careful efforts, customers will be able to drink Calaveras Reservoir water, even after an earthquake.

    A Snapshot of our Spillway Chute and Stilling Basin Today


    Spillways are important safety features on any dam. They allow for the safe discharge of high water in a reservoir around a dam.  And the new spillway at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project is no different.

    Work began on our spillway in March 2014. A total of 40,000 cubic yards of concrete, equivalent to one football field filled six feet deep, will be used to build the structure. All of the concrete is being supplied by our on-site concrete batch plant. The concrete is placed into the spillway in sections, or slabs. This spillway requires a total of 170 slabs, and we only have 18 more to go.

    The spillway chute is 60 feet wide, equivalent to a five lanes of a highway. The slabs are strengthened with reinforcing steel bars and the entire structure is anchored to the bedrock to resist movement during an earthquake. 

    The quality of the concrete used in the structure is key. It has to be kept at a cool temperature while it cures in order to prevent cracking. Sunol Valley in summer is anything but cool. That means our crews often begin cement pours at 2 o'clock in the early morning, the coolest time of the day.

    The spillway is expected to be completed later this year. This will be a major milestone for the project to complete this important feature of the dam.

    National Dam Safety Awareness Day


    As construction continues at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project, we take a moment to recognize May 31st as National Dam Safety Awareness Day. Each year on May 31st, the nation remembers teh devastation that occurred on May 31, 1889 in Johnston, Pennyslvania when the South Fork Dam failed. This tragic event resulted in thousands of deaths and left many homeless. The Johnston disaster was the worst dam failure in the history of the U.S.
    National Dam Safety Awareness Day reminds us of the importance of dam safety and preventing future failures. Dams provide many befefits such as water supply and storage, hydropower, recreation, flood prevention and improve wildflife habitats.
     
    This also reminds us how critical and important our work is here in Sunol Valley to rebuild the Calaveras Dam. We are currently 66% complete and anticipate final completion of the dam in end of 2018.

    The Calaveras Replacement Dam when complete will provide us:
    ·         The largest drinking water reservoir in the local Bay Area storing 31 billion gallons (96,850 acre ft) of water, providing more than half of the storage capacity for 2.6 million customers

    ·         A new seismically upgraded dam with a structural height of 220 feet, a crest length of 1210 feet and width of 80 feet at the crest and 1180 feet at the base

    ·         A new 1550 ft spillway and a new intake/outlet shaft tower which will convey water to and from the reservoir through a pipeline downstream and to our Bay Area customers

    It’s National Safety Week!


    Every year, more than 80,000 workers suffer an injury on construction job sites across the U.S.  Any one incident is one too many. Life is too precious to not make safety the number one focus in the U.S. construction industry. This week from May 3rd through May 9th, construction firms nationwide have joined forces to inspire everyone in the industry to be leaders in safety.

    Here at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project, the project team had a lot to celebrate. Over 150,000 work hours have been reached with zero safety recordable incidents since October 2014. Given the size of the machinery we are using on the site, the complexity of the work, and the sheer number of activities on site each day, this is truly remarkable. Safety is important to our teams as we build the replacement Calaveras Dam. Every morning this week, the teams had a special safety topic to remind workers the importance of construction safety. The workers got together for a celebratory barbecue to pat ourselves on the back for being vigilant, reminding us to take care of ourselves and each other as we continue with construction.

    We are proud of our team and they are on to their next goal to reach another safety milestone!
